Guttenberg Public Library Director


The Guttenberg Public Library is seeking a community-minded and articulate individual to be our next Library Director. Guttenberg (population 1,919) is a picturesque community located in Northeast Iowa on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town was chosen as one of Iowa’s Great Places and is located along the River Bluffs Scenic Byway.

Skills Needed: Management and leadership skills, thorough knowledge of public librarianship, financial skills, public relations skills, organizational skills, communication skills, keeps up to date with current trends in literature, and knowledgeable about computer operations and data communications.

Educational, Experience, and Certification Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree, Associate degree, or 30 semester hours of college credit from an accredited college or university

5 years of library experience preferred

Supervisory experience in a related field

Public Library Director Certification (must complete within two years of hire)


Essential Job Duties: (40 hours per week)

Financial – Maintains funding for the library through the city and county budget process. Provides reports to governmental agencies.

Personnel – Trains and supervises library department employees.

Programming – Develops and supervises programs.

Collection Development – Keeps the library collection up to date by following procedures in the Collection Development Policy.

Public Relations – Promotes library events in the community through a variety of media.

Operations – Organizes and supervises day to day operations of the library.  Provides recommendations regarding improvements and acquisitions necessary for the efficient and effective operation of the library.

Facilities – Maintains and arranges for repairs to the library building and grounds. Assists in the planning and coordination of improvement projects.

Professional – Participates in County, Regional, and State organizations and training as budget allows.
