From approximately 1854 - 1929, a quarter of a million children from East coast orphanages were loaded onto trains and transported west, where they were presented "for the picking." The children were taken from a sometimes-rough existence to an unfamiliar rural setting. It was a different era - one that cannot be judged without understanding what living was like then. Ms. Krantz tells their story.
